Ruth Jeffs

I have a background in dance and physical theatre.  My dance training subsequently led me to pursue a career in massage and has influenced and informed my understanding of injuries, posture and effective body maintenance.

I have qualifications in sports massage therapy, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial release techniques and reflexology.

I draw on all aspects of my training to provide tailor made treatments to best suit your needs.

I have considerable experience of working with a broad range of clients including sports people, dancers, health professionals, older adults, oncology patients and people experiencing stress related conditions.

I have worked in several London based charities including Hoxton Health, Stress Project Islington, Hands Inc Hackney and London’s Royal Free hospital.  I have also volunteered within the NHS working with staff members as part of a staff wellbeing enterprise.

I work from two locations – Canonbury Natural Health Clinic in Islington, and the AP Physiotherapy Clinic in Muswell Hill.  Please note that currently I am only seeing clients at AP clinic in Muswell Hill.

ABOUT THE THERAPIES I OFFER

I offer sports massage therapy, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial release techniques and reflexology.

Massage

Massage therapy is a non-invasive, natural and safe way to help reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of stress. Prolonged or intense periods of stress can often lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as back, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, tiredness, anxiety and low mood.

Regular massage can help to release the build up of muscular tension and promote a deep sense of relaxation. Being relaxed helps the mind and body to function more effectively and helps promote a general feeling of wellbeing.

People are increasingly acknowledging the health benefits of massage and are incorporating regular massage into their health and fitness routine.

There are various styles of massage, however, a typical session will normally incorporate a combination of the following techniques

Swedish Massage is a therapeutic, deeply relaxing treatment.  A typical session of one hour consists of a full body massage using oils and gently rhythmic flowing strokes to aid relaxation and help reduce symptoms of stress.

Deep Tissue Massage is a therapeutic treatment that concentrates on the deeper layers of muscle tissue.  A typical session focuses on identifying and helping to release areas of chronic muscle tension.

Sports Massage Therapy works to remedy problem areas brought about either by injury or prolonged periods of physical stress.  Regular sports massage can be helpful as a preparation for physical activity and as a preventative and reparative treatment prior to and following sporting events.

Reflexology

If you are feeling stressed, tired, lacking in energy, having trouble sleeping or generally feel you could do with some time to relax, a reflexology treatment or course of treatments, can be an effective way to help you unwind, de-stress and relax deeply.
Reflexology is a non-invasive, holistic therapy treatment based on the ancient Chinese belief that there are areas and pressure points on the soles of the feet that correspond directly to specific parts of the body.
The principle is, that by using acupressure and massage techniques on the soles of the feet, it can release channels of energy in the body, help stimulate the body’s natural healing process and support the maintenance of good health and wellbeing.
Following treatments, reflexology clients commonly experience feelings of deep relaxation, increased energy and improved sleep.
A typical reflexology session of one hour begins with the therapist taking a medical history and discussing any concerns or questions you may have about your treatment. You will then be required to remove footwear and lie on a warm, comfortable couch. The therapist will apply a massage oil or lotion to your feet, and using fingers and thumbs will use acupressure and massage techniques on specific areas of your feet and lower legs. Should your therapist identify areas of tension on your feet during the treatment, they may discuss this with you at the end of your session and offer suggestions for aftercare.
